Business Owners – Do you have proper snow/ice removal plans in place?

Enough is enough! That is what we are all thinking when it comes to more snow storms. As much as we would like to think winter is just about over, it isn’t. Are you prepared to control snow and ice hazards at your business?

You purchased General Liability coverage to protect you in the event of a slip and fall. But the best thing to do is to take steps to avoid one. Following are points that you should include in your snow removal plan:

  • Know who is responsible for snow/ice removal. It you are leasing your premises check your lease to determine whose responsibility it is to keep surfaces free of hazards. If you own the building, make a written plan to remove the snow/ice yourself or hire a snow removal contractor.
  • If you elect to hire an independent snow removal contractor establish a written contract. The contract should include sanding, salting, regular checks on the property and 24 hour on-call services.
  • Monitor outside lighting. Since lights are usually on longer during the winter months, more frequent bulb replacement may be required. Slip/fall conditions can more easily be seen when lighting is good.
  • Monitor the condition of floor mats and floors inside of the building. Floors and mats should be kept dry to avoid potential slip-and-fall hazards.
  • If someone does experience a slip/fall, promptly report it to your insurance agent or directly to your insurance company. A claim can then be opened under the general liability portion of your business insurance
